Vienna’s Historical Warning to New York on Mamdani

Vienna’s tragic past warns New York: when populism turns antisemitic, hate becomes the new normal.

The likely ascension of Zohran Mamdani to the New York City Mayorship brings uncertainty and unease to the city’s Jewish community, and for good reason.

Mamdani’s rhetoric is rabidly anti-Israel, both in its war in Gaza and in its existence as a Jewish State. How might this manifest itself should he become mayor? A historical analogy comes to mind in Vienna, Austria — more than a century ago — when another so-called populist reformer rose to power and paved the way to normalizing Jew hatred in central Europe.

Indeed, the Vienna of 1900 and New York City of 2025 share several similarities. Both Vienna’s population then and New York’s now is approximately 10% Jewish. In 1900, Jews had lived in Vienna for generations, just as they do in New York City today. In Vienna, Jews such as Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Gustav Mahler, Stefan Zweig, and Victor Adler had achieved significant roles in finance, culture, and politics. The same is true of countless titans of business, politics, fashion, and culture in modern-day New York.

However, one powerful mayor was instrumental in dramatically changing the lives of Jews in his city.

Karl Lueger was elected mayor of Vienna five times, serving from 1897 to 1910. His antisemitic views, which vilified Jews, blamed them for social and economic issues, and promoted boycotting Jewish businesses, were so extreme that initially, the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph refused to support him. Ultimately, after Lueger’s fifth election, the Emperor conceded and offered his support.

With Lueger in power, it became socially acceptable — perhaps even trendy — to be an antisemite. Lueger’s influence on Vienna was tremendous. He took latent antisemitism that existed and made it socially acceptable to express openly. He would give speeches, blaming the Jews for Vienna’s financial problems, rousing crowds with his antisemitic fervor.

He normalized antisemitism and successfully poisoned the minds of Vienna’s population against the Jews. Adolf Hitler himself credited Lueger as someone who helped shape his views on Jews, and he wrote in Mein Kampf that he became an antisemite in Vienna.

While Lueger himself was dead by 1910, the wicked flame that he helped light ultimately resulted in the eradication of Vienna’s Jews in the Holocaust, while the non-Jewish residents of the city largely watched or (in many cases) actively took part in their destruction.

Lueger created an environment where violence against Jews was socially acceptable, giving rise to leaders who took his antisemitism to the next level.

Simon Wiesenthal lived in Vienna after World War II, and remarked later that, “Austria was about 8.5 percent of the population of greater Germany. Nazis from Austria, in positions of responsibility in the machine, were responsible for half the crimes of the Holocaust.”

Lueger deserves historical blame for much of the hatred he sowed. Lueger was not Hitler. But he created an environment in Vienna where violence against Jews was socially acceptable, giving rise to leaders who took his antisemitism to the next level.

Zohran Mamdani, in New York City today, is heading in the same direction.

Mamdani supports Within Our Lifetime (WOL), a New York-based organization that seeks to create support for Palestinian aspirations within New York. On their website, they recommend chants like “Occupation is a crime, From New York to Palestine!” Or “From New York to Gaza, Globalize the Intifada!” “Globalize the Intifada” can reasonably be interpreted as a call to violence against Jews in New York and beyond.

WOL protested at Columbia University, with some people yelling at Jewish students, “Never forget the 7th of October! That will happen … 10,000 more times!” WOL has posted maps online revealing locations of Jewish organizations, stating “they have blood on their hands.” This is not only outrageous, but also a direct threat. Yet, Mamdani stands alongside them.

During his college years, Mamdani co-founded a chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). This organization has become infamous for fostering an atmosphere of intimidation towards Jewish students on campuses all over the country. SJP currently faces bans on multiple campuses. Yet Mamdani continues to support them staunchly.

Labeling Israel as a genocidal state, which Mamdani frequently does, perpetuates harmful blood libels against Israel and pro-Israel Jews. This kind of rhetoric creates a toxic environment where intimidation against Jews and Jewish organizations becomes acceptable and legitimate. Mamdani’s threats to arrest Netanyahu are not merely illegal under Federal law; they invite further hostility and unrest for Jewish New Yorkers.

Although Mamdani claims to have Jewish supporters, in this he echoes Vienna’s Mayor Karl Lueger, who also had Jewish “friends.” When confronted about this contradiction to his antisemitic views, Lueger infamously declared, “I decide who is a Jew.” This attitude reflects Mamdani’s own selective acceptance: as long as one is not a pro-Israel Jew, they are welcome in his circle.

The position of Mayor of New York City does not include dictating international policy. Yet, Vienna’s Jewish history has shown us that antisemitic rhetoric can have a global impact.

People are Very Afraid
They worry is there going to be a Holocaust in America
Remember how in the August 1991
Crown Heights Riots , mayor
David Dinkins told the Police to
Stand Down and said about the rioters
“Let them Vent”
Police Stand Down orders should
Never be Legal or Allowed ,
Especially when lives and property are in danger , People pay High Taxes for Police to Serve and Protect
Police Stand Down Orders should Never be Legal or Allowed …
Is New York City going to have
Endless Crown Heights Riots and Pogroms ? Endless Night of Broken Glass Riots like what happened in
Nazi Germany in
November 1938, or Oct 7th
Will President Trump or the Governor send in the National Guard to Protect Jews and Maintain order
Mamdani would be a terrible mayor for everyone

This is the most moronic article I have ever seen. Comparing a person who criticizes Israel a lot and then comparing him to an actual openly anti semitic mayor of Vienna is just reprehensible. I'm not sure if other people like you live in an echo chamber but criticism of Israel and antisemitism are not the same thing. You got to really careful to call anyone who is anti-Zionist as antisemitic. Now, I don't like antisemitism either ok and I don't tolerate any form of that discrimination before you assume what I believe in.

History repeats itself in cycles, everywhere on earth, from one generation to another, resulting in similar outcomes.. The people of New York chose Mandani for reasons best known to them, just like the the people of Gaza decided to vote Hamas, several years back. We'll soon see the results. So the Jews of New York should brace themselves

I’m not an NYC resident, so I can’t vote. I must point out that Cuomo is known for harassing women. I have been subjected to harassment in the past, despite being a modestly attired Orthodox woman. It is horrible and one feels trapped.
I have likewise been subjected to antisemitic comments in the past, and I simply rebuttted those.
I think that Cuomo is a danger to women. And being a naturalized citizen, Mamdani cannot run for president.

Frankly, I too wish we had better choices for NYC mayor but I live in a suburb outside of NYC and am not eligible to vote either. If I lived in NYC there is no way on earth I would vote for Mamdani. With that said, when a woman tells you she has been sexually harassed you need to listen and show empathy.

Rabbi Levine beat me to the punch. I thought of Vienna mayor Karl Lueger, when first hearing of Mamdani. The main difference is Austrians were already warmed to anti-semitism by the time Lueger came on the scene. There were even political parties proudly professing Jew hatred.

Can't I, as both a Jew and as a human being, be vigilant about Antisemitism while still deploring the bombing and starvation of innocent people who through no fault of their own, were born Palestinian, and were caught in the crossfire of the present war and previous violence?

Barb

Rather than deploring, you should become aware of the facts instead of accepting terrorists' outright & proven lies: they're the ones starving the Gazans by stealing the supplies meant for them—both those sent by Israel (btw, have you ever heard of a country that's fighting for its very existence trying to supply civilians among the enemy with food?!) and others?

And don't forget that an absolutely overwhelming majority of the people you call "innocent" voted for Hamas, knowing full well that their primary objective was to destroy Israel!

I believe so. Even if many Palestinians voted for Hamas and participated in the actions on October 7 the children are certainly innocent. While Israel goes above and beyond to minimize collateral damage it is possible to both support Israel's just war and simultaneously grieve for the loss of life and the human suffering and carnage.

Your sympathy is misplaced: The Israeli children who were orphaned are Innocent; the children of Hamas terrorists and so-called "innocent civilians" are taught lies about Jews and that it's a "mitzvah" to kill Israelis.

Perhaps you also believe "Palestinian" {this word's current usage is fallacious!) propaganda and the skewed media reports of self-hating Jews and antisemites? Certainly sounds that way!

Israel was at war, and civilians are casualties of war. That doesn’t mean we should celebrate the deaths of innocents.

You are delusional. Hamas started the war by butchering our people and others who were in their homes, in the area and at a concert. Hamas started the war, but does not wear uniforms and hides among civilians and hides under hospitals, schools and in mosques etc. These "civilians" not only participated in the original attack and helped Hamas by imprisoning hostages, they gave out candies and spit and abused the hostages when they were brought into Gaza. The Gazans voted Hamas in for their government and are therefore complicit. Israel needs to kill every Hamas member and if Gazans are starved by Hams and die, remember that they started the war.

“ Civilian” Gazans haven’t merely voted for Hamas in 2006 but filled the ranks of Hamas with its murderers every year thereafter. Gaza's children by age 2-3 have absorbed and espouse the murderous hatreds and actions of their parents and schools. the natural history of all murder always involves people who were caught up in circumstances and cultures they didn’t create and posses genetic dispositions they didn’t engineer. So potential victims of the murderers have no choice but to defend themselves that is the natural course . Lions for example do not worry that jackals need food The lions will naturally stop the jackals that would devour the cubs for food
Gazans are the source of Hamas Until Gazans have a deep change of heart and repent and confess their crimes they must be stopped

I think you can and should feel grief at the loss of innocent life, absolutely. It's the deploring part that people feel is unfair, as there are so many facts that point to Hamas being the guilty party in that discussion. (They started the war, unprovoked, use their innocents as human shields, steal food and aid from their people, etc)
I think the fact that everyone gets so offended when people say stuff like this actually attributes to the Jewish mentality. Meaning, as a people, causing loss of life is so terrible and horrifying that we get very touchy when it's even insinuated that we are responsible for loss of life. Pretty sure the other side wouldn't feel that way if you accused them of causing loss of Jewish life....

It is difficult to understand the incremental changes that has led to a Hamas support likely become Mayor of New York CIty the home to Jews since arriving from Eastern Europe to escape persecutions and pogroms since the 1880's. But there is no denying it, New York and its Jewish community are under siege.

Plenty of polls have been wrong (whether through honest or dishonest mistakes), and the leftist media can't be trusted either: For one thing, their unprofessionally biased coverage is nothing more than a propaganda tool to convince undecided voters they might as well vote for that rasha because he's going to win anyway, knowing that most like to think they've voted for a winner.

It's deceptive (like most of the news being reported), yet it tends to work among non-discerning voters.
But let's not forget that Hashem is in charge here, so that whatever happens will somehow turn out for the best.
In the meantime, Jewish New Yorkers would do well to persuade others about the dangers for non-Jews as well if they vote for such a radical socialist!

After reading the various comments, I find myself very troubled by the extreme opinions expressed by every side. As a former New Yorker, I am shocked by the vilification of immigrants - do you forget that We were immigrants?- ; dismayed by the assertion that Obama led the Muslim brotherhood, the false claim of Israel's genocide and ignoring Hamas's violent control of Palestinians in Gaza, concern that buying a gun and voting Republican (peh) is the answer to antisemitism, and ignoring the Nazi voices of the Young Republicans, etc.
BUT, bottom line, what the comments reveal is the wide division within the Jewish community of New York and for me, that is the greatest tragedy created by this mayoral race.
I am saddened to see this.

Want to argue these points? Want my sources?

You bet we’re in trouble. At the very least, we will be stripped of our power, status, security and the tactics used to denude us demographically will be intensified. Israel will either survive without America or Israel won’t survive.

My advice? When you’re in a hole, stop digging. Stop issuing demographic reports about us. How moronic and treasonous to have done that. Either vote R or don’t vote at all. Buy guns, keep your subversive mouths shut and heads down.

And the Jewish community should take out ads to say that HIAS has been taken over and does not represent us. Like so many organisations ( e.g. March of Dimes ), once their cause was done, they didn't want to stop and so an organisation founded to help LEGAL immigrant Jews is now advocation for illegal non Jewish immigrants because they are their customers. Not many Jews left there either.

There is something that comes to my mind when I read this article: "Aquel que no recuerda su historia está condenado a repetirla." Growing up in Latin America, I remember a dear family friend who fled Cuba. He told us of the promises of Socialism and how it worked out for the Cuban people (negatively). To think that New York City has a Socialist who has no administrative experience, no previous work experience, aspiring to manage an immense budget... with the promises of Socialism, it will fail. The thought of this is an oxymoron. His lack of support of the Jewish community in NYC, his lack of response to "globalize the intifada"- no condemnation of this- is the sign of a failed individual.
